Ten Disadvantages of ICT You Should Know About
The Information Communication Technology industry brings us new technology and innovations almost every day, allowing us to connect, collaborate and create in ways we never thought possible before. However, along with these major advantages, there are also some disadvantages you should be aware of when using ICT in your work or personal life. Here are ten major disadvantages of ICT you should know about before using it...
Jobs are at risk
The internet has put jobs at risk and the fallout is just starting to be seen. A study by Oxford University researchers in 2013 found that 47% of U.S. jobs are at risk from robots and other forms of automation. Additionally, many fields such as insurance, finance, accounting, and journalism have already seen major job cuts due to new technologies. Jobs can also become irrelevant because of changes in technology: for example, when traditional phone systems were replaced with mobile phones, many customer service operators lost their jobs.
Social media can be addictive
We're all guilty of spending too much time on social media. The average person spends at least two hours a day browsing their favorite site. And while it can be great for staying in touch with family and friends, there are some major disadvantages to know about before you get too deep into your next post. For example, studies show that social media can lead to low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety.
We're becoming lazier
One major disadvantage is that we're becoming lazier because the technology eliminates the need to do some tasks. For example, in the past, if you wanted to look up a phone number, you had to find an old phone book and flip through it. Now you can just go online. This makes people lazy because they don't have to exert any effort in looking up the information they want.
The world is becoming more cyber-dependent
It's undeniable that the world has become much more interconnected and dependent on technology, but there are some disadvantages to living in a cyber-dependent world. Here are ten disadvantages you should know about:
1) Health risks - According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, there is evidence that some people experience negative health effects from continuous exposure to electronic devices. This can be associated with eye strain, neck and back pain, or other symptoms. Doctors recommend taking frequent breaks from your phone and limiting screen time for children.
2) Lack of face-to-face contact - With the increase of social media, many people use texting and social media instead of talking to each other. As a result, people may feel less connected because they don't have any face-to-face contact with others anymore. Reports haveaveg an increased sense of loneliness as a result.
2) Effects on sleep - Some studies show that certain types of screens (like laptops and tablets) emit light at a higher intensity than desk lamps, which can impact sleep cycles. For example, when using a laptop before bedtime, it's important to dim the screen by adjusting brightness or using Night Shift mode (macOS). 3) Increased risk for car accidents - Texting while driving increases your risk for accidents because drivers are not paying attention to their surroundings.
We're losing our social skills
According to a University of California, Irvine study, the average American child spends nearly nine hours a day in front of some sort of screen, and that doesn't include time spent reading or doing homework. The study also found that teens who spend three hours or more per day on social media are more likely to say they're unhappy than those who don't. This is just one example where our social skills are suffering.
Privacy is at risk
Many people feel that the use of ICT is an invasion of their privacy. With this technology, you have to assume that anything you do on your phone or computer will be tracked and stored by the company or app. In some cases, it could be sold to a third party for advertising purposes. There is also no easy way to know if your data has been hacked until after the fact. If someone gets into your email account, they can easily view all correspondence with other people as well as financial information like credit card numbers and passwords. Another common risk comes from those pesky malware viruses that infect our phones without us knowing about them. One example of these viruses is the RAT (Remote Access Trojan) which allows hackers to take over control of someone’s phone from afar using an infected link or SMS message.
We're at risk of cyber-attacks
We are increasingly at risk of cyber-attacks. Hackers cannot only steal personal data but to steal our identities and run up credit card bills on our behalf. And unlike burglars who must break into your home in person, hackers can break into your account from anywhere in the world.
We're at risk of identity theft
One major disadvantage of the internet is that it’s a little too easy to steal someone’s identity. Hackers have been stealing identities for years, but now with advances in technology, it can be done in mere minutes. One study found that over half of all adults had their identities stolen online at some point and about 18% had their identities stolen more than once.
We're at risk of data breaches
Data is one of the most valuable assets that we have as a society, and yet so many people are careless with it. Hackers are constantly trying to steal data from companies, government agencies, and private individuals. And even when they're not successful at stealing data, there's always the risk that they'll do something like delete an entire hard drive full of information. That's why it's important to take precautions like encrypting your data or keeping your devices in a safe place (or both).
We're at risk of ICT overload
Today, everyone is at risk of information overload. We have so many tools at our disposal that we can't keep up. Many people are looking for ways to avoid using a computer or the internet altogether because it's just too much. Here are ten disadvantages of ICT that you should know about: The amount of information available is overwhelming and it's difficult to find what you're looking for.
